the short answer
Prostaglandin-free brow serums work, but more slowly: expect fuller, stronger brows in 12 to 16 weeks rather than visible regrowth in 4 to 6. Look for peptides such as myristoyl pentapeptide-17 and avoid anything ending in “-prost”, “-prostenate” or “-prostenolamide”.
what prostaglandin analogues are
Prostaglandins are lipid compounds your body already makes. Synthetic analogues were first used in glaucoma eye drops, where doctors noticed a side effect: patients grew longer, darker lashes. Bimatoprost became the prescription lash treatment Latisse; cosmetic cousins such as isopropyl cloprostenate followed in over-the-counter lash serums and, soon after, in the brow versions of the same brands. They work by keeping each hair in its growth phase for longer.
why some women avoid them
- Redness, itching or a stinging feeling on the skin under the brow, usually in the first two weeks.
- Darkening of the skin where the serum touches. It fades after stopping, but slowly, and shows more on brows than on lids because the area is larger.
- Unwanted hair where the serum migrates: the bridge of the nose, the temple, the upper lid. Precise application matters more for brows than for lashes.
- They are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and doctors advise against them for anyone with glaucoma or recent eye surgery.
None of this makes them dangerous for most women. It does mean the decision should be yours, and made with the label in front of you.
how to spot one on a label
Brands rarely write “prostaglandin” on the box. Scan the ingredient list for isopropyl cloprostenate, dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide, methylamido dihydro noralfaprostal, or trifluoromethyl dechloro ethylprostenolamide. The pattern to remember is the “prost” buried in the middle of a long word. In our ranking, GrandeBROW lists isopropyl cloprostenate and RevitaBrow Advanced an undisclosed analogue; the rest are peptide- or elastin-based.
what works instead
Peptides. Chains such as myristoyl pentapeptide-17 and myristoyl hexapeptide-16 signal keratin production at the follicle and thicken the hair you already grow. They will not extend the growth phase the way an analogue does, so the change is in density and strength more than new hair. Add biotin, panthenol and keratin for conditioning and caffeine for circulation, and you have the formula behind most gentle brow serums.
Among the prostaglandin-free options in our ranking, VEGAMOUR GRO Brow leads on clean-beauty positioning and plant actives, The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Lash & Brow is the value choice with roughly 19,000 reviews, and Olaplex Browbond, Anastasia Brow Genius and Nulastin take a strengthening, conditioning route. Check the label on QUABROW and Obagi Nu-Cil before assuming either way.
our recommendation
Start prostaglandin-free. Give it sixteen weeks and a day-one photo. If you love the result, stay. If you want more regrowth and your skin is not sensitive, move to a cosmetic analogue serum with a patch test and a precise brush, and keep the peptide formula for maintenance later.
